F3L Contest Series

Welcome to the F3L Contest Series

Promoting thermal duration soaring competition across the United States

About the Series

The F3L Contest Series is dedicated to promoting radio-controlled thermal duration soaring competitions following the international rules for F3L as defined by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI). Whether you're a seasoned competitor or new to the sport, the F3L Series offers exciting challenges and plenty of fun.

FAI F3L is a discipline of model soaring that emphasizes precision, consistency, and strategy in thermal flying. Pilots launch their wooden 2-meter sailplanes using a hi-start (a bungee and length of line) and attempt to achieve precision duration flight times of 6 minutes within 9-minute working time windows, ending with a spot landing.

Mostly, however, it's about the simple joy of soaring and camaraderie among pilots. This is a team event, where the most important quality of a team member is their level of focus and a positive attitude. Experience and physical abilities help but are not the most important thing.
